The writing of my two books Can't Miss: The Kevin Pangos Story and A Hero's Journey: Beyond Little Norway and Olympia Sports Camp  encouraged me to start my own company, that I am calling Can't Miss Publishing. If you have a vehicle to help others and show respect for those who have come before us, you do it. That's what heroes do and we are all heroes in our own journey. I know Kelly Dunham would have done it. In Kelly's honour I am doing it.

When Kelly Dunham passed away on May 24 2020 her husband Doug and few others started the Kelly Dunham Memorial Foundation. In looking on the website the mission is simple, and direct. Check out their website at kellydunhamfoundation.ca

To raise money and awareness for the foundation the foundation hosts a basketball tournament and a golf tournament, which took place recently. I spoke to Doug after the tournament and he was excited that something that started as a tribute of sorts for Kelly has turned into something that will really help the community. I was unable to attend the golf tourney so decided that I would become a hole sponsor and also donated three copies of A Hero's Journey to the prize table. I'm proud that I was able to contribute, so that the legacy, and journey, of Kelly Dunham lives on. I love the saying that Kelly is " Never Forgotten... Sharing a huge hug." Anyone who knew Kelly probably shared in one of her monstrous hugs. You walk into a room where she is and you leave feeling better than when you came in. The hug and the laugh.


I'm also proud that I gave what I could for the good of the foundation but that it was a drop in the bucket as some big names and companies in the Hamilton community have jumped on board. I hope the tournament, and the foundation, continues to grow. It's a beautiful lesson that the hero's journey continues through the people that we influenced, and are now influencing others. RIP Kelly, my friend.

In the summer of 2019,  Blaine Scatcherd  was introducing himself at the opening meeting of week 5 and told the assembly of coaches that he worked as a counsellor at Olympia for 4 ¾ years. People who knew the story, including Dave Grace, roared with laughter at the self-effacing honesty Blaine showed when recounting an incident that may have been the worst in his career, yet a defining moment that changed him forever and made him a better teacher and coach, and a better person.    Blaine Scatcherd is from Ottawa, where he was coached in football at Glebe Collegiate Institute by Olympia coach Skip Riddell. They say that a picture tells a thousand words. How about two pictures? In the writing of A Hero's Journey: Beyond Little Norway and Olympia Sports Camp I got to interview a lot of people dedicated to Olympia and to the vision of Dave Grace. Out of this process I learned three things about the 50- year journey of the staff of Olympia: 1- Olympia inspires young people 2- Staff inspire others to do the same 3- Staff move on in their lives, carrying Olympia with them, while others replace  Staff like Randy Kipfer and Kevin O'Reilly This picture of Harlem Globetrotter Curly Neal with some amazing counsellors can be found in the book at the start of Chapter 6-Allies and Ogres .
