Open Heart, Open Mind A recurring theme in the process of writing A Hero's Journey: Beyond Little Norway and Olympia Sports Camp and the process of promoting the book is the great people that we get to meet along our path.  The people who gave of themselves so that their story could make for a better book, and those whose passion for everything Olympia makes this whole journey very gratifying and humbling. A thought I have today is that we can also get to know people by reading about them. We also learn a lot about ourselves by exploring their journey. This actually is a goal for the journey of this book, that the reader learns about themselves by following the journey of others. This week in Arizona I read a great book that captures this fact. Clara Hughes is a six-time Olympian, and a six-time Olympic medalist, encompassing both cycling at the Summer Games and Speed Skating at the Winter Games. Her Olympic career took her from Atlanta in 1996 to London in 2012. She also won num

Catching the Vibe makes Community! This past Saturday I had the good fortune to attend a basketball game at the University of Arizona as the Wildcats  hosted the UCLA Bruins. It was great to share the experience with good friends Brian Arsenault and Steve Butz, three retired guys looking for the excitement of NCAA basketball. We got it. The McKale Centre in Tucson holds 14,600 fans and the place was bursting. The energy in the place was at an absolute crescendo when the band entered the arena en masse 8 minutes before tip off and the place rocked for the entire game. This picture was taken before the energy of the place took on a life of its own. A lesson in the sharing of the vibe to create a community.  What is cool about the experience is it all came about because of the people we get to meet on our journey. When I was writing Can't Miss: The Kevin Pangos Story  I spent a lot of time in Spokane Washington, the home of Gonzaga. Assistant coach Tommy Lloyd was so gracious and help

Set a Stretch Goal Olympians of a certain vintage can remember when The Clock was central to the message of what becoming your best meant at camp. The twelve hours of the clock are explained in detail in A Hero's Journey: Beyond Little Norway and Olympia Sports Camp.  To me the heroic journey begins at 2 O'clock,  with setting a Stretch Goal. Growth only happens when we challenge our comfort zone,  This can be as simple as setting a goal that is beyond what you know you can do at the moment. Enjoy the process of being comfortable being uncomfortable  I have established such a stretch goal.  This week my publisher, Friessen Press, named the book a best seller. Very cool thing to see in an email. To be honest I  don't even know what that means but it has helped me set a stretch goal.  To be  a national best seller. Heady goal indeed. Part of me is scared to even type this goal, but I guess that is the uncertainty of exactly what setting a stretch goal is all about. The chall

A couple of items of note as we get back to Tuesdays With Dave. By the way, the blog is nearing its 90th entry.  This journey of A Hero's Journey: Beyond Little Norway and Olympia Sports Camp turns a new page as we turn the page on another new year. Thanks so much to those who are along for the ride. The support is appreciated and I feel the steps we are taking are going to take this journey to where it was meant to be. I also feel that the support is growing. Welcome to our new website. aherosjourney.ca. Still in its infancy, the website will add to the entertainment value of the journey and provide an easy-to- use link to everything one needs to know about the book, including how and where to buy it. Check it out! One aspect of the website is a testimonial page. When you click on testimonials you'll see a few that are already there, including a beautiful note from Olympia associate director Greg Rogers. Thanks so much for the thoughtful words Greg. I would love to gather tho
