The Power of The Logo
Last Saturday morning Joy and I met two huge allies on this next part of our journey for lunch at the Bronte Boathouse to discuss next steps for A Hero's Journey: Beyond Little Norway and Olympias Sports Camp. To do anything worth doing you need people in your corner whose own journey gives them perspective and insights that can help you learn and grow. I'm happy to call Kristi and Suzy Petrushchak two such people.
When I was a young coach and starting at Olympia I was lucky to meet and be mentored by John Petrushchak. John's story is one of the coaches in MEET THE MENTORS in Chapter 4. One of the most impacting processes of writing this book is that I will have forever the memory of interviewing John for this book, honoured to be in his presence. The connection Joy and I have made with Kristi, Suzy, and Debbie since their father's passing takes on a feeling of Olympia-family, just like hundreds of other such stories over the 50 year history of Olympia Sports Camp.
After writing all that I have to say that this is not what I'm writing about. What occurred on Saturday was such a cool 'the universe guides us' moment. Joy, Kristi, Suzy and myself met Sydney. Here is Sydney with her newly-purchased copy of the book, a book she just had to have.
Here's the sequence of 'universe' events..... Kristi randomly picks out the Bronte Boathouse to have lunch. Could have been any number of nice restaurants near the water in Oakville.... It's rainy and Joy and I are waiting inside .... I notice that this waitress from the other side of the room seems to be staring at me... As she walked toward me I was thinking she may be a former student or player, but she wasn't staring at me, she was staring at the Olympia logo on my golf shirt, which I put on that morning, mainly to show Kristi and Suzy the Olympia 50th Anniversary logo.... Did you coach at Olympia? She asks me.... We talked at least five minutes about her time at Olympia and how it was the best place on earth. She did mostly sailing. I loved the story that one summer she was up at camp and phoned home to her parents to book the following week too.... Sydney is a waitress who by the way was surprised that she wasn't sent home because of the rain...She was so excited to hear that there was a book written about a place that meant so much to her and she wanted a copy, so I ran to the car and got her one.... Never having met us, she opened up that she and her best friend Megan went to Olympia for a few years together. She even got emotional when she told us that Megan was dealing with some tough stuff right now and that the book would mean a lot to her....Sounds like the universe puts us where we were meant to be. I know this happens everywhere but I have had a lot of priceless Olympia moments of universal awareness ever since I wrote this book. Maybe its just being more aware...If Kristi doesn't pick that restaurant..... if I don't wear that golf shirt..... if it isn't raining so we had to wait inside..... If Sydney doesn't NOT get sent home..... if Sydney doesn't take the bat off the shoulder (she referenced that) and have the nerve to come up to a stranger.....Then the universe doesn't get to give Sydney's Olympia mate Megan a boost of Olympia spirit when she needs it most... Just four Olympians having breakfast on a Saturday morning and the power of Olympia and the Alignment of the universe takes over. The result of all those 'random' facts was a great moment for a girl we just met and a better moment for her friend who we've never met..... How did you day start?
The people we get to meet on our journey!...Embrace the Journey....

I hope people are enjoying the blog one tenth as much as I am writing it, allowing me to explore hero's journeys and have experiences like meeting Sydney, all while promoting the sale of a really good book. . I would appreciate it if people could like and share to your social media followers. The base will grow and this thing will take off. There are thousands of Olympians throughout the 50 years whose stories are in the book, not by name per se but by the fact that every Olympian, like Sydney, has a connection to the place that binds people over generations together.
