What a Sweet Way to end 2020 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8y9dojrjdE I still think the Olympia crowd could do a  great version of this, like they do at very wedding or sporting event! All the best to all in 2021. This blog is about the journey of the  writing of the book   A Hero's Journey: From Little Norway to Olympia Sports Camp.  The blog will contain excerpts from the book and my personal thoughts on what the place and the people that make up Olympia's journey is all about. The title comes from the great book Tuesdays With Morrie, by Mitch Albom. The blog's title is recognizing Dave Grace as Camp Director but all content is my own.

Olympia Sports Camp is truly a family affair One of the things that  A Hero’s Journey: From Little Norway to Olympia Sports Camp  captures is the family aspect that emerges from the camp. Coaches become role models, a special bond is formed between people who would never have met, friendships become lifelong, and the sense that we are a family at Olympia carries a real resonance. But in some cases, it is indeed family that shares the Olympia bond.    Case in point my brother Pat. Here is part of what I wrote in  Chapter 1- Leave the Ordinary World.   The family connection at Olympia also involves my brother Pat. I knew Pat would be great for Olympia and that Olympia would be great for Pat. I was proud to work week 9 with my brother and watch the passion with which he coaches and cares about kids. Pat being at camp added to the fun for sure as our kids would jump all over their uncle Pat in the cabin or he and I would go for a ‘buoy swim’ in between sessions. Aside from this though, Pa

Networking 101 Chapter 11 is entitled the Soul Of Olympia . This is where Olympians have submitted their own stories that capture their personal Olympia Sports Camp journeys. These stories add to the rich texture of the history of the camp and show the breadth and depth of life at Olympia. Bonnie, Erin, and Kathy submitted this story. Thanks to them and many others who took the opportunity to share their story. If you would like to submit a story to the manuscript email coachdools71@gmail.com. Bonnie Rysdale, Erin Murphy, Kathy Brook   We would have never known back in 1987 that 33 years later we would still be laughing and reminiscing about those formative years.    Whether it was our first kiss, first time away from home or other firsts it definitely created a long lasting bond.    Olympia is a special place. At 16, 17 and 18 it's the place where we learned how to take the bat off our shoulders.  It's where we were with people who supported us and never judged us. We were abl

Chapter 4 of the book is called MEET THE MENTORS and is about the Coaches. The role of mentors in our life, our journey, cannot be over stated. They impact our values and help define where we go and what we do after our playing days are over. The list of coaches at Olympia is several generations long. When Olympia started in 1974 at the Camp Winnebago site it was a one-week basketball camp and the cream of the crop of coaches in Ontario were there. John Petruschshak, Terry Thomson, Doug Hayes, Gerry Brumpton, Bob Coull and many others were the staff
You know the Songs? The Songs that get you up because you know all the steps? Or better yet you fake it through because that's what Olympians are allowed to do, being comfortable being uncomfortable?  Those songs help us grow at Olympia. One of the best things about Olympia is seeing campers tentative at opening ceremonies with all the energy around them an hour after getting to camp and then those same people are flying all over the gym at the closing ceremonies. Lots of parents wondering where this new kid came from. In researching for Chapter 10- The Songs - I came across a YouTube video that probably isn't as good as what we can produce with the help of Dave and Greg and a staff pumped to get us pumped but it shows this  legendary song in a different light. Enjoy! Now the challenge to followers of this Blog. Do one of the following, or both - Name all the Olympia Songs you can think of. I have a list of 11. There may be others. - Write about what is your favourite song and

A Hero's Journey: From Little Norway to Olympia Sports Camp. Notice the title. I started this blog yesterday with the idea that maybe every Tuesday I would write something about my journey of writing this book. Then I get an email from Olympia full time staffer Michelle  Stockstill and a text from good friend and Olympian Kevin O'Reilly and I came to the conclusion that this journey has no shot clock and I'll write something when I've got something to say.  Thanks to these two for their support and care about the book, about Olympia, and about getting things right. Michelle kindly and rightfully pointed out that the title of my book had to change. The official name of the camp  we know and love is Olympia Sports Camp. I had it down as Camp Olympia for brevity purposes I guess.  Then Kevin's text helped me think that I could take this blog to a whole other level ( Can't you hear Dave saying this with the staff echoing the emphasis ) His son Joel has a link about

Today is Tuesday December 8 2020. This is my first entry to my new blog entitled Tuesday's With Dave. I got this idea when I met with Olympia founder and director Dave Grace about my upcoming book A Hero's Journey: From Little Norway to Olympia Sports Camp. I'm calling the blog Tuesday's With Dave to mimic the great book, and movie, Tuesday's with Morrie by Mitch Albom.  I will be using this blog as a vehicle to spread the word about my book, OUR book, and will be putting excerpts from the book to show just what the book, about the place and people that make up Camp Olympia, is all about. I like saying the line that when it comes to computers I know a lot about basketball. If anyone who reads this has ideas on how to spruce this blog up and create more traffic to it let me know. Email me at coachdools71@gmail.com. I hope to connect this blog to the Olympia Family in as many ways as possible My goal with this book is to honour Dave and all the people who have made u
